Where the Lupin carry the bearing of the wolf, the Slíogach carry the patience of the marsh itself—lizard-kin, cold-blooded in more than temperament, at home in the dark waters and tangled roots of the far southern fens. They stand upright, broad and low-slung, with thick tails trailing behind them for balance, scaled hides ranging through deep olive, black-green, and mottled brown, and eyes with slitted pupils suited to seeing clearly in water too murky for any other race to navigate without drowning first in their own blindness. Webbed hands and feet make them as much swimmers as walkers, and a Slíogach can hold its breath, by most accounts, for a span of time that unsettles those who witness it for the first time.

The Slíogach make their home in the Brine-Root Fen and the wider marshlands of the deep south, territory so treacherous to outsiders—thick with black water, false paths, and roots that seem to shift when unwatched—that few travelers who enter uninvited ever find their way back out again unassisted. This is, by design, exactly how the Slíogach prefer it. Where the Lupin's isolation grew from wariness earned through hard experience, Slíogach isolation runs deeper still, closer to a fundamental preference than a defensive posture—the fen suits them, and they have little interest in a wider world that does not suit them nearly so well.

== Patience as Philosophy ==
If the tome must distill the Slíogach character into a single trait, it would be patience—not the long-view patience of the elves, measured in centuries, but a slower, stiller patience measured in the space between a single held breath and the strike that follows it. Slíogach hunters have been known to remain motionless in the black water of the fen for hours, waiting for prey, rival, or simple opportunity to present itself, and this same stillness colors nearly everything else about how they approach the world. Decisions are rarely made quickly among the Slíogach; a matter that another race might resolve in a single conversation may occupy Slíogach elders for days of careful, wordless consideration before any answer is given.

This patience is often mistaken by outsiders for slowness of mind, an error the tome is compelled to correct plainly: Slíogach intelligence is not diminished by their unhurried pace, merely differently weighted. They are exceptional trackers, careful strategists, and shrewd judges of a situation's true danger—qualities that reward patience far more than haste ever could in the treacherous ground they call home. A Slíogach who moves quickly has almost always already spent considerable time deciding that speed, in that particular moment, was warranted.

== Society of the Fen ==
Slíogach society organizes around Deepings—settlements built low and half-submerged into the fen itself, using the mangrove-like root systems as both foundation and fortification, such that an untrained eye might walk within a stone's throw of a Deeping and see nothing but ordinary swamp. Authority within a Deeping rests with Eldest-scales, the oldest and most experienced members of the community, chosen not through contest or bloodline but through simple accumulated survival—a Slíogach who has lived long enough in the fen's dangers to reach true old age has, by definition, proven judgment worth deferring to.

Unlike the shifting, individual-driven leadership of the Ogres or the contested Alpha-pairs of the Lupin, Slíogach governance is notably stable and slow to change, consistent with the broader Slíogach temperament—an Eldest-scale's authority is rarely challenged outright, though it may simply be quietly set aside over time if the Deeping's collective patience judges their counsel no longer sound. Conflict within a Deeping is rare, not because the Slíogach lack for disagreement, but because their preferred method of resolving it—prolonged, careful, mutual silence until a shared answer emerges—tends to defuse disputes long before they reach the point other races might call a conflict at all.

== Relations with Other Races ==

The Slíogach's aid to the fleeing humans, alongside the Lupin, remains one of the more remarkable moments in the tome's account of that age, given how little the Slíogach are known to involve themselves in matters beyond the fen. That the Athàn-Garrow's plea reached them at all, let alone moved them to act, suggests either a debt or a respect between elf and Slíogach that predates the written record available to the tome's authors—a matter the watchers intend to investigate further, in time.

Beyond that alliance, Slíogach contact with other races remains limited and cautious. The Fenwrought Jutons and Fenlight Bocans who share the Brine-Root Fen maintain an old, careful truce with the Slíogach—each race having long since learned the fen's dangers well enough to know that conflict among its inhabitants serves no one but the swamp itself. Outsiders who enter the fen with honest need and proper respect are occasionally guided safely through by Slíogach scouts; those who enter carelessly, or with poor intent, are simply and quietly left to the fen's own judgment.

== Slíogach Subgroups by Depth ==
Shallowmarsh Slíogach (fen borders, nearest solid ground)
Lighter in color and more frequently glimpsed by outsiders, the Shallowmarsh dwell nearest the fen's edges and serve as the primary point of contact for the rare trade or diplomacy conducted with human or elven visitors. The most patient of the Slíogach subgroups even by their own high standard, given how much of their territory they must share with the outside world's noise and haste.

Deepwater Slíogach (fen interior, black-water channels)
Darker-scaled and rarely seen by any outsider who lives to describe them well, the Deepwater keep to the fen's most treacherous inner channels and are believed to hold the oldest Eldest-scales among all the Deepings—elders whose accumulated patience borders on legend even within Slíogach society itself.

Rootbound Slíogach (mangrove canopy, semi-arboreal)
A smaller subgroup that has adapted to life among the fen's twisted upper root systems and canopy rather than its water alone, the Rootbound are noticeably more agile and climbing-suited than their kin, trading some of the Slíogach's aquatic mastery for a talent at moving through the fen's tangled heights.

* '''ARMOR +2:''' Saurians have scaly skin that acts as leather armor.
* '''BITE:''' A saurian’s fangs cause Str+d4 damage and may be used against grappled foes.
* '''ENVIRONMENTAL WEAKNESS (Cold):''' Though not truly cold-blooded, saurians are poorly suited for frigid conditions. They suffer a −4 penalty to resist cold environmental effects, and suffer +4 damage from cold-based attacks.
* '''KEEN SENSES:''' Saurians have acute senses, giving them the Alertness Edge.
* '''OUTSIDER (Minor):''' Most races distrust saurians for some reason. Perhaps it is their strange ways and customs, their often-sibilant speech, or an ancient subconscious fear of their reptilian ancestors. Saurians subtract 2 from Persuasion rolls with all but others of their kind.
